the marine sea museum in Bordeaux

The Marine Sea Museum (MMM)

Located in the heart of the old district of Bacalan, and the Bassins à flots, a former place of shipbuilding and port activities, the Musée Mer Marine (MMM) born in 2019 offers more than 7500 m2 of exhibition space in a sublime architectural building with clean lines. The various collections and exhibitions bring together history, art and science, emphasizing the links betweenman and the maritime world: between fear and fascination.

Children will be attracted – among other things – by the large number of old models of suspended ships and deck objects made by sailors during their long crossings. There are scientific objects, paintings, sculptures and works of art, but also nautical charts and atlases characterizing the universal history of navigation, travel and discovery. Gathered in the permanent exhibition space, and beyond the horizons, an impressive variety of newer boats are gathered and tell us the modern epic: submarines, steamboats…

The Mer Marine Museum is not ONLY about history! The second floor also aims to raise awareness of the importance of protecting our oceans and waterways, as well as the species that inhabit the marine world, and reminds us of their essential beauty and fragility. From the creation of the oceans to the observation of the world as it is today, the Musée Mer Marine gives pride of place to education in favour of environmental protection while integrating into its journey (produced with National Geographic) interventions by contemporary artists committed to this cause. Thepublic and teenagers find alternative reading codes that they know well and that happily complement oceanographic approaches.

Our opinion on the Mer Marine Museum

  • A modern and pleasant space in the Bacalan district, an old district rehabilitated
  • A museum that is definitely worth a visit for ocean lovers and history buffs
  • A varied pedagogy that will captivate the youngest and … those who accompany them!

Planet or Plastic? The exhibition event (from June 8, 2023)

  • This exhibition, set up in partnership with National Geographic , traces the history of plastic since its creation in the 19th century. Starting from a noble intention which was to replace the ivory of slaughtered elephants for their tusks, John Wesley Hyatt, invented celluloid
  • The exhibition takes us into the applications and revolutions created by plastic and the devastating effects of this material on the oceans, the environment, fauna and flora, but also on humans
  • Photography is widely used to show – sometimes in a slightly shocking way – the realities of this pollution, and are signed by great photographers recognized as much for their artistic talent as for their involvement in the defense of the environment.

The exhibition ends on a note of hope, for a more sustainable and responsible world by evoking solutions such as awareness campaigns, the banning of non-recyclable products and individual and collective actions. So, Planet or Plastic?
