Jāṅgala, in the heart of the Indian jungle at the museum with Rudyard Kipling

With the “Jāṅgala” exhibition, children discover the Indian jungle and all the ecosystems that surround it! A route is set up in the rooms of the Museum, then will continue from 28 April 2023, outdoors, in the historic botanical garden of the Public Garden and the botanical garden of the Bastide, opposite, on the other bank of the Garonne.

Did you know? A long time ago, the “jungle” in India referred to a dry, arid and wild environment! And it was Rudyard Kipling with his “Jungle Book” in 1894 that introduced into everyone’s imagination a vision and a completely different conception of the jungle: that of an abundant and luxuriant nature.

In reality, and this is the subject that the children discover in this very successful exhibition, the “Jangala” is made up of very varied backgrounds! From the arid desert to the highest peaks in the world, young visitors wander through the heart of the four great ecosystems that make up the Indian jungle. Developed by the teams at the Museum of Bordeaux, a very successful immersive scenography offers children the opportunity to explore the environments through touch, sight, hearing and smell :

  • The arid plains
  • forest edges
  • tropical rainforests
  • foothills of the Himalayan range

The youngest can meet the animals that Mowgli met in the Jungle Book, and which educated him in the laws of the jungle: the mongoose Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, thegreat black panther Bagheera, the bear Baloo and other heroes of the animated film.

Several levels of reading are used tointerest and make children aware of the reality of the jungle, nature and endangered species : species sheets, photographs and large sets, soundtracks and entomology showcases to observe insects and their astonishing camouflage.

The encounter with the animal specimens from the museum’s collections is fascinating for children: the golden jackal and the mongoose from arid environments, an Asian elephant skull from the edge of the tropical forest. Also, a tiger, a Javan rhinoceros and the black panther of the tropical rainforest! At the foot of the Himalayas, they will meet the red panda and the magnificent snow leopard !

The inclusive content of this exhibition, which is intended for all audiences, is particularly accessible and adapted to people with disabilities.
